Head, Research Enterprise and Scholarly Communication, University of Guelph, Ontario.

Ex malo bonum: a bold new focus on scholarly communication

The University of Guelph Library, like many academic libraries these days, was faced with the need to make some daunting budget cuts. The response was a major organization renewal initiative. This talk will reveal how the need to do less with less resulted in a bold new commitment to scholarly communication on our campus. We will focus on organizational structure, radical transformation of librarian responsibilities, and strategies for connecting in meaningful ways with faculty in all disciplines.

Wayne Johnston is head of the Research Enterprise and Scholarly Communication team at the University of Guelph library. Prior to joining the University of Guelph in 2004 Wayne worked for the United Nations in both New York and Geneva. His experience also includes working with wildlife management in Canada’s Arctic; establishing a library in Ghana; promoting fair trade in Nepal; and working with refugees and victims of war in Croatia.
